The legendary Jeanne Robertson, CSP, CPAE, graced NSA Michigan with her delightful presence and shared comical insights to help us find the funny for our speeches and programs. Jeanne was in town for her Rocking Chair Tour at the Macomb Center for the Arts in Clinton Township on November 15, 2018. Fifteen members of NSA-Michigan attended this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Here are a few tips we learned from Jeanne about how to find the funny in your life:
- Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story. Most of the story should be true but if you need to adjust parts of the story feel free to do so. It’s your story.
- Be on the lookout for the funny. When you’re out and about be intentional about finding the funny during your day. When a funny situation happens, write it down and then test the story during casual conversation. If people laugh, then you know you are on to something. Work at developing it.
- Start a Funny Journal. Keep track of the funny stories by recording your daily interactions. Did something happen to you on your way to the grocery store? Record it. Ask your Uber driver, what’s the funniest encounter he or she ever had. Record it. The goal is to get as much material as you can, then whittle it down to the very best stories. Every story won’t be gold but this process will help you find the stories that are.
You can find the funny in all parts of your life. For more great tips from Jeanne, check out her website at www.jeannerobertson.com.
