You never know where a conversation will lead—especially a conversation with a fellow speaker at an NSA event.
I had a casual chat with a group of women speakers at Influence in Orlando two years ago. The ideas we brainstormed totally transformed my speaking business. Within weeks I had created a new brand, a logo, five videos, and within the year I had published my first book. All inspired by the conversation with speakers who were eager to share ideas and help another speaker.
Two of these women were from the UK, had traveled to attend their first NSA event, and didn’t know many other speakers. We made such a connection that I was invited to participate in a video forum for one of their groups in London. Our friendship grew as we stayed in touch via Facebook.
About two months ago, one of the women announced a pilot program for entrepreneurs and invited me to join. I knew she was a successful businesswoman, and that she was brilliant at leveraging social media for her various programs. So, I joined the group.
For the past eight weeks, I have been immersed in this group called Tribe Builders which is all about building our communities through engagement, online offers, and thinking big. Really big. The first question she asked each of us was: “What world problem does your program solve?” She challenged us to create a global initiative.
So that’s what we have been doing and it has been a fascinating and mind-stretching experience. The other participants are almost all in the UK and it is interesting to learn from their experiences and perspectives.
My point is that having honest exchanges with people who understand your unique business challenges as a speaker is priceless. Had I not invested in myself and my business by deciding to attend Influence, and then to put myself out there to have a conversation with a group of complete strangers, I wouldn’t be in the middle of creating my global initiative and having my first online pilot program underway.
If I had to choose which has provided greater value for me as an NSA Member, relationships or professional development, it would be a tough call. I do believe that my greatest professional development has come as a result of my relationships fostered through NSA.
My best suggestion for anyone desiring to increase their expertise and build their business is to engage in every opportunity that NSA offers (online and in person) both at the national and local level. You just never know where a random conversation will get you. Maybe in the middle of a global initiative…
