Each one of us is hard-wired with a unique Professional Differentiation that makes our speaking programs distinctive, engaging, impactful, and memorable to clients and audiences.

  • Have you defined your Professional Differentiation?
  • Do you own your Professional Differentiation?
  • How do you deliver on your Professional Differentiation?

Regardless of the topics you speak on, or audiences you speak to, you always bring your Differentiation with you. Even if you do not realize that you do so.

Pursuing, capturing, and defining “That Thing That You Do,” which connects you to your audiences, initially is elusive and ambiguous. Once discovered, your Differentiation may not seem epic or appealing or important. Or, What Differentiates You is bogged down in embarrassing or toxic scenarios that you must face, process, and translate.

Joseph Campbell, the American professor of comparative religion, mythology, and human experience, with whom George Lucas and Steven Spielberg consulted in creating the original legendary Star Wars® Episodes 4–6, put it best: “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” (This quote plays out big time in the swamp with Luke and Yoda, right before Yoda departs forever. But I digress.)

What is your Treasure? What is your unique point of Differentiation as a speaker? A signature message that you, and only you, can deliver? Once you get out of your own way, you are better able to get to where you need to go. Together. With your colleagues, clients, and audiences.

As we begin our New Year, and New Decade, Together, consider that it is your Differentiation that actually defines what you speak about. It is your enduring and differentiated message and spin you give to a topic your audiences “think” they’ve heard before from other speakers. Until you took the stage and delivered your Differentiation to them.

Because you had the courage to enter the cave you fear.

Your audiences all have their own caves they fear to enter. You discovered your Value, your Differentiation, your Treasure. In delivering them to your audiences, you give your audiences permission to get out of their own way, enter their own caves, and discover their own Treasure as well.
